TapAges 4 -Adult
Tap dance is a dance in which the rhythm or rhythmical variation is made with the toe or heel by a dancer wearing shoes with taps. Beginner students will learn basic concepts and rhythms while more advanced students will learn more intricate rhythms and combinations. Tap is a great class for dancers to learn rhythm and musicality. All tap classes learn a choreographed routine which is later performed at our Year End Showcase in May.
Jazz classes are one of the most popular styles of dance here at Protege. Classes begin with a warm-up focussing on technique, flexibility, coordination, and strength, followed by progressions across the floor, center work, and combinations. Students learn fundamental jazz steps and basic vocabulary, across-the-floor exercises, and simple combinations. All jazz classes learn a choreographed routine which is later performed at our Year End Showcase in May.
Ballet provides a solid technical foundation that can be applied to all dance forms. It is the foundation for all dance and is recommended for any dancer. Protege follows both the RAD and Checetti syllabus as well additional techniques with Progressing ballet technique. Classes offered in the Intensive training program are exam and technique-based only. General program classes follow the syllabus but do not participate in the exam. All ballet classes learn a choreographed routine which is later performed at our Year End Showcase in May.
Contemporary dance is an expressive style of dance that abandons the rigid, centered aspect of classical forms of dance, and utilizes unconventional movements from styles. Dancers will gain an understanding of how to incorporate the spine, suspension and release, some improvisation and composition, floor work as well as phrases that travel across the floor and choreography. All ballet classes learn a choreographed routine which is later performed at our Year End Showcase in May.
Protege Dance Project follows the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus. Acrobatic Arts is the fusion of classic dance technique and the precision and athleticism of acrobatic elements. Often defined by unique choreography, acro dancers seamlessly blend musicality, emotional expression, line, and extension with acrobatic movements in dance. Acrobatic Arts is designed to complement a dancer’s training. Classes in other genres are required to participate in the Protege Acro Program.
Hip HopAges 4-18
Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of hip hop styles. Classes are offered to all ages and abilities. All hip hop classes learn a choreographed routine which is later performed at our Year End Showcase in May.
New to Protege. The modern program has a curriculum that consists of the ISTD modern syllabi and contemporary elements. Modern dance, though similar to ballet in some stance and technique, is trained using parallel, inverted, and contracted shapes. All modern classes learn a choreographed routine which is later performed at our Year End Showcase in May. Dancers in the Intensive Training Program will partake in the ISTD modern exams.
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)Ages 8-18
Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program that has been designed to enhance students’ technique by focussing on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance. It is a unique training system using ballet-technique specific exercises to train skill acquisition in a graded and progressive manner from junior through to advanced levels. PBT helps teachers around the world prepare their students to receive the strength they need to achieve their personal best.
Twinkle StarsAges 3-5
A 45 minute class containing ballet and jazz creative movement for our little dancers. Dancers will also learn basic steps and terminology in all both styles. The use of props such as hula hoops for the “freeze dance” makes the end of class the most fun! Theme days such as halloween, holiday magic, Frozen or Disney princess themed and thanksgiving will be included.
